Outpost Wilderness Adventure

The OWA Story

History

Outpost Wilderness Adventure enters its twentieth year with a rich tradition of small group adventures and expeditions that have taken all kinds of people to the far and high ends of wild America -- from the West Ridge of Alaska's Mt Hunter to the depths of Copper Canyon and the jungles of the Amazon with many days and nights spent in between learning and developing skills in more subtle locales.

OWA began in the Hill Country of Texas as a single, end of summer trip as part of the Camp Stewart program in 1979. In 1983, the first full slate of summer adventure programs for teens was offered. In 1985, OWA's Base Camp was moved to the Tarryall Mountains of central Colorado where the majority of the summer programs now originate . Since '85, the Base Camp facility has continued to expand as the summer youth programs have grown to capacity. More recently, a growing array of programs for adults, families and private groups have been developed utilizing facilities in both Colorado and Texas and at selected wild locations throughout the West. OWA continues to maintain a winter base in Texas.

Philosophy

From the outset, OWA's particular philosophy has been built around providing a quality, small group experience with an opportunity for in-depth learning and experience that is quality and fun oriented. We are sold on the many benefits of living and playing in the outdoors and in the wild outdoors in particular. We strictly adhere to the accepted backcountry and cultural ethic of minimum impact and make every effort to instill a sense of respect for the outdoors among all of our team members and clients.

Adventure is at the core of every OWA activity and that means experiencing things that are outside of the normal realm of experience. We offer both introductory and advanced training in a variety of adventure-sports from rock climbing to fly fishing, mountain biking, rafting, and backpacking to ice climbing as well as expeditions to some of the most exotic adventure destinations on earth. Past OWA teams have explored and climbed in Ecuador, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Alaska, Canada, the Alps, Mexico and all across the Western US.

Whether it's a weekend program at Base Camp or a summit attempt on one of the world's great peaks we are confident that whatever else an adventure experience with OWA might be, it does provide great memories and great lessons that can be brought back and positively applied to the real world. While there are always physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging times in the backcountry, OWA is in this for the fun of it and we want all of our team members to walk away from each OWA experience eager for an even bigger taste of the excitement of the wild! It should be noted that OWA does the real thing. We make no apologies for doing what we say we're gonna do. Adventure travel and adventure sports come with their price -- out of the way places, unpredictable weather, sweat, long days/nights, cold, tired legs, etc. etc. etc. are the price you pay for a true adventure experience and we're here to help our team members deal with the hardships and relish the rewards!

OWA is fully insured and bonded, licensed by the State of Colorado, and operates on public lands under permit through the US Forest Service, BLM, and National Park Service. OWA is a supporting member of the American Mountain Guides Association and a member of the Camping Association for Mutual Progress and the Association for Experiential Education. OWA's rock climbing program has been accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association.

Custom Programs for Groups

Outpost Wilderness Adventure offers accommodation and programming packages for group retreats and conferences of all sorts and sizes throughout the year. OWA works with corporate, youth and school groups ranging in size from 6 to 200 at facilities in Texas and Colorado and at selected outdoor sites throughout the west. Each group program is completely customized to meet the needs of each particular group.

Corporate Retreats
Our facilities are ideal for small groups and the very nature of adventure programming is well suited to the typical size of most corporate groups.

Our Texas facility, Heart O'the Hills offers nice, private accommodations in a country lodge setting for up to 40 people (double occupancy) and dorm style accommodations for up to 175 with several nice breakout rooms. Our Colorado facility is more rustic with bunk accommodations for up to 50 and a limited number of private rooms, yurts and cabins in an unsurpassed natural setting at the base of Bison Peak in the Tarryall Mountains.

Our corporate packages feature great meals (a variety of menus available ranging from gourmet to hearty), individual attention and service, exclusive use of the facility and the availability of a wide range of team building and adventure programming that can serve as a training tool, ice breaker or simply as a diversion from a tedious schedule.

Youth and School Groups
Both of our facilities offer relaxed accommodations for up to 175 (in Texas) or 60 (in Colorado) with lots of room to roam and be active in a terrific setting. Camping options are available in Colorado. Groups can provide all of their own programming, or mix their own activities with adventure programming outfitted and directed by experienced OWA Guides. Meals are generally provided by the facility, but "no meal" options are available. Pricing options range from $20-$60 / person / day.

Backcountry Trips and Programming Options
OWA can provide it's full range of activities for groups including rock climbing, mountain biking, fly fishing, team building, alpine climbing and backcountry trips into various parts of Texas, Colorado, Wyoming and Mexico. OWA generally provides all equipment and expert instruction geared to the level and age of the group.
