History of Sage and Cactus Village

The Sage and Cactus Village, Limited Liability Company, a unique Tepee and Breakfast, is owned and operated by DuWayne and Ruth McGee of rural Lusk, (Niobrara County) Wyoming. The only one of it's kind!

The McGee Ranch land had previously been owned by a William Pearson who located on it in 1898. He established alfalfa and wild hay meadows and irrigated them from the Cheyenne River. These meadows are still in operation today and can easily be seen from the camp. Mr. Pearson maintained a large herd of horses so all of the original fences were made from smooth wire, but have been replaced by barbed wire to accommodate the present cattle ranch.

The ranch was purchased in 1928 by DuWayne's parents. He took over the ranching operation in 1960 and continues the irrigated hay meadows and the cattle ranching.

The Sage and Cactus Village LLC, A Dream Come True, was opened in 1993. After a search for appropriate tepees, the McGees purchased ten authentic Lakota Sioux style tepees from Don Ellis of the White Buffalo Lodges in Livingston, Montana. The tepees were set up in June and were ready for business in July!
