We leave Quito early in the morning and head northwest on the highway passing Mitad del Mundo, Pululahua Crater, Mindo and Puerto Quito (all optional stops if so desired) towards the coastal plain. After a 3hour descent of the Western Cordillera we finally reach the plains and head another 3 hours through banana and palm oil plantations towards the coast,. After another 3 hours we reach the small village of Rio Verde where we spend the first night.
This day will be spent relaxing at our privately owned beach Playa Nupa, which is located a half hour north of Rio Verde between Lagarto and Las Peņas. On this unspoilt beach we recover from our long first day drive.
We take a boat trip along the coast up to the island of La Tolita/Pampero where there are arquelogical pre-columbian sites of the Indian culture which was known as La Tolita . After visiting the site we head by boat to other places along the coast going swimming or fishing.
On this day we visit Majagual, a Mangrove Reserve which boasts of the highest Mangroves trees found anywhere in the world (up to 60m high). After walking through this unique nature reserve we head to Borbon, a town situated on the Rio Cayapas where we spend the night.
On those two days we hire a boat and head up the river Rio Cayapas, deep into the tropical rain forest. We visit small indigenous villages like Sta. Maria and San Miguel and spend the days visiting the communities and its jungle surroundings.
From Borbon we haed towards San Lorenzo and head the Western Cordilleras up to Ibarra where we arrive after a 6 hour ride. We drive then back to Quito after passing Otavalo, Cochasqui (optional stops) where we arrive late afternoon.
